Safety Comes First

By kdeprez on December 19, 2018March 26, 2024

It’s 3 a.m. and one of your family members is suddenly sick.  Nearest 24 hour drug store, about 45 minutes away.  Often times medical situations, even minor ones, require immediate attention.  Time spent looking for the right treatment is time lost.  When every moment counts having a well-stock supply of emergency care necessities and medications ensure quick care when your family is feeling their worst.

Here is a list of a few of the items that you should always keep in your home just to be prepared:

□ Antacids

□ Antibiotic ointment

□ Anti-diarrhea medication

□ Antihistamines

□ Anti-itch topical medication, such as hydrocortisone or calamine lotion

□ Aspirin

□ Band-Aids

□ Cold and/or flu medications

□ Fever and pain reducers

□ Pain relievers (Acetaminophen, Anti-inflammatory)

□ Rubbing alcohol

□ Small pair of scissors

□ Thermometer

□ Tweezers

It may seem like common sense to store these items in the medicine cabinet, after all it is called the medicine cabinet right.  However, most of these supplies should be kept in a cool dark place.  The bathroom cabinet is a constant source of humidity, this causing the medication to lose their effectiveness.

Be sure to check your supplies at least every 6 months and dispose of any medications that have expired.  Dispose of the expired medications is a proper fashion, do not flush them down the toilet.  Most pharmacy’s have a take-back program and will properly dispose of the expired medications for you.

First-Aid Kit

When you need first-aid supplies most, you’re usually not in the best frame of mind to search for them. A well-stocked first-aid kit keeps the items you need together and easy to find.

Pet First-Aid Kit

Humans aren’t the only ones who fall victim to emergencies requiring first aid; our pets sometimes find themselves with scrapes, cuts, bumps, or other mishaps requiring attention. For minor problems, or to stabilize your pet until it can be brought to a veterinarian, stock a first-aid kit with basic items that can address any number of injuries.

Car-Safety Kit

You never know when trouble is going to occur on the road. Prepare for emergency situations by stocking your car with a safety kit.

Disaster Supplies

There are some things in life that are simply out of our control, such as natural disasters. Make sure you’re ready for any emergency — store the following essentials in a safe place to use in your home or to take with you if you’re forced to evacuate.
